Sharks Prompt Scare at Tobay Beach
Two 6-foot sharks were spotted about 15 feet off shore from Tobay Beach on Thursday, July 23, 2015. The waters were closed to swimmers for about 90 minutes.
Authorities say Long Island beachgoers have been give the all-clear after a shark sighting prompted an evacuation.
Town of Oyster Bay spokeswoman Marta Kane says the incident occurred around noon Thursday. Police received the call at 11:49 a.m. and initiated a helicopter search.
Tobay Beach is a restricted-access beach in the western half of Long Island, about 50 miles east of New York City. The two sharks were reportedly about 6 feet long and swimming toward Gilgo Beach.
Last week, a Great White was shoved back into the water after finding itself beached on the sands of Cape Cod.
Swimmers were immediately evacuated from the ocean as a safety precaution, according to WABC. Beach goers also reported seeing two sharks. There were no reported injuries.
