Dolphins closing in on Gase for head coaching job
To show their confidence in the new coach, the Dolphins gave Gase final say over the 53-man roster.
A team source told the Miami Herald that while a deal was not yet finalized, the two sides are making progress.
Gase has his work cut out for him with a highly-paid, but underachieving Dolphins team led by a talented but kind of dumb and childish Ryan Tannehill.
The Miami Dolphins officially named Adam Gase their new head coach Saturday morning.
Gase, the 37-year-old former offensive coordinator of the Chicago Bears and Denver Broncos, was coveted by the Browns. In 2015, Gase’s first year in Chicago, Cutler finished 10th, just behind Kirk Cousins, Philip Rivers and Matthew Stafford. Tannehill was given a $96 million extension past year, but he has a 29-35 record as a starter. He came onto the radar as a head-coaching candidate while working as Peyton Manning’s quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator in Denver and earned positive reviews for his work with Jay Cutler as offensive coordinator in Chicago this past season.
The Giants interview with Gase represented the fourth person considered for Tom Coughlin’s job.
After one year with the Bears, Gase now has his first head coaching job, succeeding interim head coach Dan Campbell, who is expected to stay with the team as an assistant coach.
“This is where we’re at right now with Ryan is I’ve seen him play very minimal games”, Gase said.
Meanwhile, the 49ers head coaching search continues with names like Chip Kelly, Mike Shanahan, and Hue Jackson (who will be interviewed on Sunday) being tossed around as potential replacements for the lackluster Jim Tomsula.
In addition, Gase brings a wealth of knowledge and success to Miami as the offensive coordinator for the greatest offense in National Football League history.
He’s going to be 70, and that factored not because of his age but because it would make the hire a two- or three-year answer to a three-to-five year question, and the Dolphins wanted to emerge with that long-term plan.
Gase would become the Dolphins’ ninth coach since 2004.
Added Manning: “He’s extremely bright on all things football, an excellent communicator and always eager to learn more”. “He is ready for this for sure”.
