The Nominees For This Year’s Oscars Have Been Announced
Writer Nick Hornby told film critic Jason Solomons and the BBC’s Jane Hill that he was “delighted for the film” and “so proud of Saoirse”.
The nominations mark the second time 21-year-old Saoirse Ronan has been up for an Oscar at a relatively young age after missing out for her supporting role in Atonement when she was 13.
Brooklyn and The Revenant are both up for Best Picture while Ex Machina is up for Best Original Screenplay and Star Wars: The Force Awakens has been nominated for Best Original Score, Best Editing, Best Visual Effects and Best Sound Mixing and Editing.
Irish co-production “ROOM” is up for both Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Picture.
The Carlow native is up against Cate Blanchett, Charlotte Rampling, Brie Larson and Jennifer Lawrence.
Michael Fassbender is also in the running for Best Actor for his portrayal of the controversial Apple founder in Steve Jobs.
The Arts Minister Heather Humphreys has congratulated the nominees.
Finally, Stutterer, written directed and edited by Benjamin Cleary is nominated for the Best Live Action Short Film.
Over all Irish films picked up a record nine nominations today, the largest ever for the Irish film industry.
James Hickey, Chief Executive Bord Scannán hÉireann/the Irish Film Board said: “What a triumph for Irish film”. I am sure that these nominations will give the entire film sector here a boost.
The 88th Academy Awards will take place on Sunday, February 28 at Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre, with comedian Chris Rock on hosting duties.
