Although “Star Wars” now sits comfortably at the top of the North American box office, the top grossing film in one region may not be a reliable hit in another.
The Force Awakens has dominated the global box office since its release on the 17th December and continues to move up the all-time list.
It had an equally impressive second weekend, earning $153.5 million, another record. As of Tuesday, “Force Awakens” had earned $1.56 billion worldwide, however, it does not include the major market in China – it is set to open there on January 9.
The global box office record still belongs to “Avatar”, however, with James Cameron’s blue heroes taking in $1.6 billion since the 2009 release.
The Los Angeles Times notes that analysts predict “The Force Awakens” will make more than $2 billion globally, something only “Avatar” and “Titanic” have achieved.
The previous fastest movie to reach $1 billion was Universal’s Jurassic World, which did it in 13 days last June.
Star Wars fans have kept a galaxy far, far away alive for close to 40 years.
Despite the raging success the film has garnered, the said sales were disrupted due to higher rates of inflation in the domestic economy.
However, some don’t think The Force Awakens will ultimately be able to sink Avatar as the #1 movie of all time internationally, although it’s expected to beat out Titanic for the #2 slot.
