Israeli troops kill West Bank Palestinian
The long-awaited indictment follows months of investigations into a web of Jewish extremists operating in the West Bank.
One of the victims was named as 26-year-old Alon Bekel, who was the manager of the bar that was attacked.
At least two others have been charged over attacks on Palestinians. All four were charged with belonging to a terrorist organization. Three members of the Dawabshe family – an 18-month-old boy and his parents – were killed in the firebombing.
The Israeli authorities have referred to their actions as Jewish terrorism, with leaders, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, condemning the Duma attack.
In October 2015, Palestinian officials said the new files documenting alleged war crimes committed by Israel were submitted to the International Criminal Court (ICC), the only supranational judicial body mandated to impose personal responsibility on war criminals.
But critics have said that similar, albeit not deadly, attacks have festered for years with little action by the government.
The attacks took place before the outbreak of mass demonstrations across Israel and the occupied territories by Palestinians in protest of Israeli raids into the al-Aqsa Mosque compound and continued settlement expansion.
When a wave of Palestinian attacks erupted last fall, many Palestinians pointed to the unsolved Duma attack as one of the main sources of frustration motivating attackers.
The shootings come as the nation mourns the deaths of two people, who were killed when a gunman opened fire on a bar in Tel Aviv on Friday night.
The statement added that the group “condemns these heinous acts of unadulterated murder and will continue to work together with the security forces to ensure a peaceful future for all the residents of Judea and Samaria”, an Israeli phrase for the West Bank.
The case has revived criticism from rights groups which say there is a culture of impunity in Israel that allows attacks on Palestinians. She was moderately wounded and troops were searching for the shooter.
Since October 1, lone Palestinian assailants killed 23 Israelis, including soldiers and civilians. “They would not have launched an investigation were it not for the global pressure on them”, he said.
Nasser Dawabsheh, Saad’s brother, said the indictments were not enough. But his grandparents, whom AFP met at home next to their son’s torched house in Duma, said they did not believe in “unfair Israeli justice”.
