‘Hairspray’ is NBC’s next pick for a live musical broadcast
Theater legend Audra MacDonald did NBC’s The Sound Of Music Live and would make an awesome Motormouth Maybelle since Queen Latifah is unlikely to return. “The deal is still to be closed”, says Greenblatt.
NBC’s go-to duo Craig Zadan and Neil Meron (who have done all three of its live musical productions) will again serve as executive producers for the musical that will air as a holiday special in December 2016.
Who would you like to see in “Hairspray”?
NBC’s entertainment chief said Wednesday he saw no contradiction in having Donald Trump host “Saturday Night Live” less than six months after the network severed its business ties with the GOP presidential front-runner for remarks about Mexican immigrants.
Following the blockbuster ratings success of The Sound of Music, numbers slipped for Peter Pan before rebounding for The Wiz. He said that the Tonight Show host “doesn’t have a drinking problem that any of us know about”.
“I can’t thank NBC enough for continuing to support our show and this more than makes up for my disappointment in not getting cast in The Wiz“, Meyers joked in a statement.
“Not everything’s going to be a big name to the whole audience”, Greenblatt said. I don’t think there’s an infinite number of these that can be done. We had a couple businesses that we were doing with him – Apprentice and the [Miss USA and Miss Universe] pageants. Written and directed by John Waters, the movie starred Ricki Lake and Debbie Harry.
Hairspray was also produced as a 2007 film, with John Travolta in the iconic role as Edna Turnblad.
