Coughlin resigns as Giants head coach
The Giants finished at 6-10, and Reese said the team is not too far away from contending for another title despite posting losing records the past three seasons.
“I appreciate the support of John and his family and Steve and his family, and of Jerry Reese and his staff”, Coughlin said.
Tom Coughlin is no longer the head coach of the New York Giants, but it looks as though Jerry Reese has survived and will be the GM again next season.
The Giants took the unambiguous step of parting ways with longtime head coach Tom Coughlin on Monday.
Coughlin previously served as head coach of the expansion Jacksonville Jaguars, leading them to the American Football Conference championship game in only their second season. He had a record of 102-90 during his 12 year span in NY.
Manning and Coughlin have spent their entire time with the Giants together, with Eli’s rookie year coinciding with Coughlin’s first year as head coach.
Despite being the oldest coach in the National Football League this past season at age 69, Coughlin did not say he was officially retiring from coaching and left open the door to possibly returning to the sidelines. It didn’t happen because the Giants lost six games either in the final 1:14 of regulation or in overtime. “I take full responsibility for every player that’s been on this roster from the time I’ve been director of player personnel until right now, so I’ll take full responsibility-even though everybody’s involved with the grading players, and the players we take”.
Though one of the Giants’ most successful coaches, especially in the modern era, Coughlin’s last four teams did not qualify for the playoffs.
“It was truly fulfilling to be the leader of those teams”, Coughlin said.
Coughlin’s future was the main topic as players cleaned out their locker at the Giants’ headquarters on Monday. When we lose, I lose. Who can forget the time rookie punter Matt Dodge messed up, and Coughlin yelled at him in the middle of the field? They have not made the playoffs since the last Super Bowl win. “We have an obligation to teach these young men the lessons and life skills they need once their careers are over”. The Giants will likely be interviewing a lot of potential coaches, as replacing Coughlin won’t be easy. “I got it”, Coughlin said.
