Browns land Hue Jackson as head coach
Cleveland confirmed the hiring of Jackson – who had served as the Cincinnati Bengals offensive co-ordinator for the last two seasons – on Wednesday, finalising the deal before he could interview with the New York Giants for their vacant head coach position.
As to whether he’d call plays in addition to taking on head coaching duties, Jackson said, per Cox Media Group’s Jay Morrison: “I love calling plays. I do”. “He is smart. He is tough”. He’s confident. He is competitive. Jackson has experience as a head coach, knows the AFC North and has fixed quarterb… He’s got a great offensive mind.
The Giants like what McAdoo has done with the offense the past two seasons, helping two-time Super Bowl MVP quarterback Eli Manning get back on track.
The Browns fired coach Mike Pettine and general manager Ray Farmer on January 3 following another disappointing season that saw three different starting quarterbacks and ongoing off-field issues surrounding troubled second-year signal-caller Johnny Manziel. He landed Jackson after assembling an unconventional front-office team featuring a lawyer-turned-head of football operations Sashi Brown and a chief strategic officer Paul DePodesta, who made his bones in baseball management.
“The ownership has been bad the coaching has been awful there really hasn’t been anything to cheer about”, said Browns season ticket holder Al Franceschelli. “Eventually everybody’s going to be doing what we’re doing”. His biggest question to those interviewing him – Do we have the chance to win? – was answered in convincing enough of fashion to make his answer a no-brainer when the offer was presented.
“I would say there’s a lot of guys around here playing their best”, Bengals veteran Andrew Whitworth told reporters a couple days before Cincinnati’s regular-season finale two weeks ago. But the Bengals job was a good one for him as even a fall back option.
“We haven’t found a way to beat him the last couple years, so that sticks in my craw”.
“I came here to win”, he said. What do you think about that?’ for about three hours.
“I’m going to attract some good coaches and some great coaches, but to me we’ve got to find the right fit for us”, he said. It was just a very comfortable working environment. “I’ve already rolled up my sleeves and I’m ready to go”. “This is our man, ‘ and we’re excited”.
After he walked into the team’s headquarters for the first time, Jackson was greeted by team employees, who applauded when he laid out his goals during an impromptu speech. “It’s a process”, Jackson said.
In this September 13, 2015, file photo, Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Hue Jackson watches as players warm up before an NFL football game against the Oakland Raiders, in Oakland, Calif. A person familiar with the decision says the Browns are hiring Bengals offensive coordinator Hue Jackson as their next coach. I understood where they had been and where they’re trying to go.
The scene was unforgettable, and as far as I know, unprecedented. “I never knew my phone could go that long”. And that’s why Jackson is the Browns new head coach.
“I’m being very honest, I have 142 text messages on my phone”, Jackson said.
Jackson joked that he expects to get to know this year’s college class “pretty well, pretty soon”.
