U of Illinois bans hoverboards in all campus buildings
The Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued a strong warning on the use of hoverboards and most major airlines have prohibited the transportation of hoverboards.
“We can’t take a chance”, said Leon McClinton, the director of Housing and Residential Life at OSU. According to the Associated Press, more than 30 colleges or universities have adopted such policies on their campuses.
As for other Missouri higher education institutions, places like the University of Missouri have officially banned hoverboards, at least for now, after the Consumer Product Safety Commission cited safety concerns about the products.
Besides Miami University, there are a few other OH schools that have banned hoverboards.
Hoverboards have made headlines nationally for spontaneously catching on fire and causing injuries to riders from falls.
After banning hoverboards from dorms in December, officials at the University of Hartford in CT are now considering a full ban because of concerns about how to store them safely, said David Isgu, a school spokesman.
The University of Louisiana at Lafayette Office of Public Safety has advised an immediate ban on the possession of electronic skateboards on campus according to email announcements and a post on the university’s official Facebook page.
Hudson said the housing and dining staff will be working with students to inform them about the recent change to avoid confusion and conflict.
Klu, however, said he believes that the popularity of the hoverboard will lessen with time. “So we’re just trying to get a little headstart and get that safety message out there”. “I don’t like rules for the sake of having rules, there has to be a reason and this is a safety issue”.
– Temple University has officially banned hoverboards from all university campuses, the university announced over the weekend. Not only have these scooters been known to catch fire while being used, but they also pose risks for pedestrians one campus.
“A big part of it is to not leave them unattended when they’re charging because they can overheat”, said Jacob Backer with the Corvallis Fire Department.
Jones says it’s important to read the instructions that come with hoverboards very carefully.
“It’s very hard to balance and not to fall off”, Jones said.
