MU Men’s Basketball Penalized For NCAA Violations
Levels I and II are considered to be major infractions.
The violations ranged from 2011-2014 and stemmed from two donors.
“Those “benefits” included compensation for work not performed at a business through a summer internship program, through which the donor also provided “other impermissible inducements and extra benefits”, including housing, $520 in cash, transportation, iPads, meals, use of a local gym”, according to the investigation carried out by the university and NCAA.
A second donor (Representative #2) was discovered to have provided impermissible benefits to 11 student-athletes and three members of one student-athlete’s family from 2011-2014.
“I echo the sentiments of Missouri’s Kim Anderson in expressing disappointment that the actions of a few individuals have put the Tiger basketball program in this situation”.
In 2013, the NCAA “factually concluded” that while at Miami, Haith authorized a $10,000 payment to a recruit, paid off a booster to stay quiet and tried to cover up the violation when investigators began asking questions.
The University of Missouri men’s basketball program is the latest sacrifice to be offered at the NCAA’s altar.
The NCAA has been working with the university to investigate potential violations for the past 19 months stemming from information the association received in December 2013 about then-student athletes, who were not named in a report from the university.
Tulsa athletics director Derrick Gragg released a statement in light of the announcement of the investigation. “We will win at Mizzou and do so with integrity and class”, athletic director Mack Rhodes said in a release. “And as such, the NCAA credited us with exemplary cooperation”. The violations occurred under previous coach Frank Haith, who is now at Tulsa, but they have an impact on the current team.
“The University of Missouri has high expectations for every member of our community, including our faculty, staff and students, and those same expectations are applied to those who support our endeavors”, MU chancellor Hank Foley said in a prepared statement.
The school will vacate 23 wins in 2013-14, a season that saw Missouri eventually fall in the second round of the NIT. The team finished with a 23-12 record (9-9 SEC).
Recruiting restrictions are also included in Missouri’s self-sanction. The coach in violation of rules was not allowed to recruit off-campus for three months during the review period.
Neither current coach Kim Anderson nor anybody on his staff were involved.
Haith’s Tigers underachieved in his final two seasons, playing erratic defense and turnover-prone offense with a roster that often looked as though the pieces simply didn’t fit together right. Just one, Ryan Rosburg, will leave due to graduation. Anderson said. “Today, I would say I don’t know”.
An additional scholarship will be forfeited by the 2017-18 season, at the latest.
“Does it make it a little more hard?” “This is a great school”.
“Obviously, it’s a tough day for a lot of people because this program means a lot”, Rhoades said.
The NCAA is aware of Missouri’s self-imposed penalties, Rhoades said.
The university also imposed a one-year ban on postseason play, meaning Mizzou will not be eligible for NCAA or SEC tournaments in March, nor will the university receive any revenue from said tournaments.
Most would think a 33-point loss to Arkansas would be the worst news the Missouri basketball program would have this week but the NCAA made things even worse on Wednesday.
