US to play Brazil in exhibition at Foxborough on Sept 8

Fresh from its CONCACAF Gold Cup exit, USA on Thursday announced the friendly, to be played at Gillette Stadium on September 8.

American goalkeeper Tim Howard hopes to return for the games from his one-year sabbatical from the national team after last year’s World Cup.

SI.com’s Grant Wahl first reported that the USMNT would host Brazil in a September friendly last December.

This will be the 18 meeting between the U.S. and Brazil, and the fifth since 2009 with the most recent being a 4-1 win for the Seleção on May 30, 2012, in front of more than 67,000 fans at FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland.

Dunga’s Brazil, which is ranked sixth in the world, was knocked out in the quarter-finals of the Copa America in June. After defeating No.1-ranked Spain in the semifinal, the U.S. jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals by Clint Dempsey and Landon Donovan before Brazil rallied for a 3-2 victory.

The United States was relegated to the Confederations Cup playoff after being eliminated from the Gold Cup tournament on Wednesday following a 2-1 loss to Jamaica. In my opinion it was the best group stage draw that they’ve ever had (at Gillette).

“You’ll see fans of both teams with their colors, supporting their clubs and it will just be a fantastic day for soccer”.

The game will be held at 8 p.m. ET.
