‘Hundreds’ of migrants now target Eurotunnel every night
The body of a suspected migrant has been found on the roof of a Eurotunnel train on the British side of the Channel Tunnel.
The French port town is being over-run at the moment with migrants trying to sneak into Britain in the back of lorries.
Local (Other OTC: LOCMQ – news) charities told Reuters that about 3,000 migrants are living in makeshift camps in and around Calais.
It reported delays of up to two and a half hours to its shuttle passenger service from the UK yesterday.
“Please be assured we are working hard to resolve this”.
Investigators were not immediately certain of the man’s identity or exactly when or how he died, but officials think he was dead for most of the trip and that his body had been carried through the Eurotunnel train before it was finally spotted early Thursday.
Incursions by “hundreds” of migrants into the Eurotunnel terminal in France have become a nightly occurrence, the cross-channel rail operator has said.
Operation Stack, in which lorries queue on the M20, has been extended to junctions eight to 11 coast-bound.
The French government has unveiled proposals to save ferry jobs in Calais and end a stand-off in the port in which 500 ferry workers have blocked services.
“Inquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances behind his death”, a Kent police spokesman said in a report by the Guardian.
Strong winds and heavy rain forecast are also expected to add to travellers’ woes, leading police to ask drivers to plan their journey carefully.
Disruption in Calais caused by migrants gathering at the French terminal has prevented trains being properly loaded, a representative from Eurotunnel said.
Wednesday, the Channel Tunnel authority requested an extra $10 million in operating capital to offset the increased costs of security triggered by the migrant crisis.
