FX’s ‘The Comedians’ Canceled After One Season
FX confirmed it will not renew its highly-touted comedy series The Comedians for a second season. Showrunner Ben Wexler announced the news on Twitter on Thursday.
Unlike the case with Lights Out and the 2010 Terriers, when FX topper John Landgraf got on the phone to talk about the network’s cancellation decision, the network opted not to issue a statement on the end of The Comedians. Ultimately, the show just couldn’t find an audience. The comedy wrapped its 13-episode run June 25 with 306,000 same-day viewers. It was based on a Swedish format of the same title from Stockholm-based Efti AB, whose Carl Molinder and John Nordling also executive produced.
Turns out Billy Crystal’s return to series TV was short-lived.
Although one silver lining in all this is that the series received an Emmy nomination: Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for Mel Brooks.
This is a rare miss for FX, which is home to the acclaimed Louie, Married and the animated hit Archer. The cabler this month launched Denis Leary’s Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll, which set a live-plus-3 viewing record. Baskets, which stars Zach Galifianakis and co-created by Louis C.K., earned a series order, so FX has another comedy with star power in the pipeline.
