Tom Coughlin expected to resign Monday, on hot seat with Giants
The loss to the Eagles brought to an end a disappointing campaign for the Giants, who finished the season with a record of 6-10. “I strongly believe the time is right for me and my family, and… the Giants organization”. “I have spent 15 years with this organization as an assistant and head coach and was fortunate to be part of three Super Bowl winning teams”, said Coughlin.
The New York Giants have parted ways with coach Tom Coughlin, the team confirmed Monday.
Coughlin was named the head coach of the expansion Jacksonville Jaguars in 1995 and actually led them to the AFC Conference Championship in 1996, where they lost to his mentor Bill Parcells and friend Bill Belichick with the Patriots.
The search is on for the New York Giants’ next head coach, with the team wasting little time in getting the process started.
Coughlin’s final record as Giants head coach is 110-92, including playoff games.
“While the two Super Bowl trophies are incredible accomplishments, the unbreakable bond between coach and player is what defines me”, Coughlin said.
Coughlin came to the Giants in 2004 after Jim Fassel was sacked. We’ve won super bowls. There was some speculation that both would be gone after a rough season in NY, but it now appears that Reese will keep his job for the time being. It was just one day after the team ended its third consecutive losing season, and its fourth consecutive season without a trip to the playoffs.
Coughlin was the NFL’s oldest head coach at 69 years old. He established a players’ leadership committee and morphed into a more accessible leader who helped his teams bond.
What makes Coughlin a great coach is his toughness and his connections with his players. The last time they made the play-offs was in 2011 when they lifted a second Super Bowl title in four years under Coughlin’s reign.
Former Falcons coach Mike Smith might be an option, and there are a lot of coordinators around the league who are potential candidates: Bengals offensive coordinator Hue Jackson, Bears OC Adam Gase, Panthers DC Sean McDermott, and the Patriots’ Josh McDaniels (offense) and Matt Patricia (defense). “It could have been better, but I appreciate everything he’s done for this team and for me personally”.
As I sit back and reflect on Coach Tom Coughlin, I remember all the one on ones in your office talking football, game plan, etc. I think back to when I was named captain and I used to try and beat you to the facility.
