Giants Offensive Coordinator Ben McAdoo Closing in on Team’s Head Coaching
I don’t know about anyone else, but I am glad that former New York Giants coach Tom Coughlin has chose to bow out of consideration for the jobs as head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles.
The Giants are set to promote Ben McAdoo from offensive coordinator to head coach, NBC 4 NY has learned, more than a week after Tom Coughlin said goodbye to the team.
“Ben is an outstanding young coach who has great experience and has done a good job as our offensive coordinator these past two years”, Mara said. “It’s up to us now to turn that around and get back to where I think we should be”.
It’s clear the Giants believe this big mess was all the fault of Tom Coughlin, two-time Super Bowl victor and future Hall of Fame coach.
Though the Giants’ offense has flourished over the last two years, the team hasn’t. Reed is reunited with Ryan, who was the Ravens’ defensive coordinator during the safety’s first seven seasons in Baltimore.
The Eagles have been seeking a replacement for Chip Kelly, who was sacked five days before Philadelphia’s season-ending victory over Coughlin and the Giants. The Giants finished 30th in points allowed, and Coughlin replaced him with Perry Fewell, previously the DC of the Bills, where his defenses had finished 10th, 18th, 14th, and 16th in points allowed in his four seasons.
Perhaps the Giants realized this, which is why they nudged Coughlin out the door and ended up hiring McAdoo, who they realized had a good chance of heading elsewhere as a head coach. Before that, he worked for the Green Bay Packers, first coaching tight ends and then quarterbacks.
McAdoo then coached at three colleges before getting a low-level job with the New Orleans Saints. But the question that has lingered about McAdoo is whether he was ready to act as a head coach, something he has never done at any level of football.
Both Manning and Beckham have said they liked McAdoo.
Instead, I’m wondering what’s taking so long and am trying to figure out their strategy – or if they even have one.
Unless the object was to go after Bears offensive coordinator Adam Gase, and they had to resort to Plan B when he chose the Miami Dolphins.
McAdoo earned praise for his work with Manning, who completed 63 percent of his passes the past two seasons under McAdoo’s tutelage and threw for 65 touchdowns with only 28 interceptions.
