Mexican authorities are now investigating Del Castillo and Penn over their interactions with Guzman, who reportedly had no idea who the Oscar victor was.

U.S. officials said if there is a competition among U.S. Attorneys to try Guzman, Justice Department headquarters, and ultimately Lynch herself, may decide who tries him first.

The New York Times reports on messages from El Chapo’s phone, which show that he was far more interested in a Mexican soap star than in making a movie with Penn.

Mexican authorities are stepping up security measures at the maximum security prison where drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman is being held, the same prison he escaped from six months ago. In Mexico, reporters have labeled the story “Sean Penn’s fart”, referring to the story itself, not his flatulent slip in front of the fugitive drug lord.
