Obama’s State Of The Union Address Rails Against Racism, Intolerance
Obama said he wants to give it to Biden – whose son Beau, Delaware’s attorney general, died of brain cancer a year ago – and put his vice president “in charge of mission control”. But one thing is certain: Americans will be faced with an important decision this November – maintain Obama’s “hope and change” version of the status quo or to choose real change. This year’s speech was carried live on 12 networks and on tape delay on Univision.
Republicans immediately added their two cents on income inequality, with House Speaker Paul Ryan issuing a release titled “For Too Many, The American Dream Is Slipping”. It’s just wrong. It diminishes us in the eyes of the world. “The world respects us not just for our arsenal; it respects us for our diversity and our openness and the way we respect every faith”.
As President Barack Obama took his final-year agenda to voters Wednesday, U.S. Rep. Curt Clawson labeled the vision outlined in the president’s State of the Union speech “happy talk”.
“The president’s record has often fallen far short of his soaring words”, she said.
With less than three weeks until the Iowa caucuses – the first votes cast in the process to replace him, Obama berated talking points used by Republican candidates, saying anyone claiming that America’s economy is in decline is peddling fiction. Rather, he ridiculed them as likely to be “lonely” if they continued to do so, since almost all scientists, most businesses, all nations on Earth, and majorities of the population support the science and agree on the need for strong action to respond.
But Democrats alone can’t be held responsible for those growing frustrations, South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley said in the Republican Party’s response to Obama’s speech.
“And each time, we overcame those fears”, he said.
Obama will meet with a small group of people at a private home in the Cornhusker State’s biggest city before delivering a speech to a larger audience at the University of Nebraska, in Omaha. “We must resist that temptation”, Ms Haley said.
“You hear a bunch of folks right across the river and I don’t know if the TV has drifted over here, but they’re kind of depressing”, he said.
He acknowledged that many Americans felt frightened and shut out of a political and economic system they view as rigged against their interests. “I think she would have liked to see that”. We’ll pick somebody, but we’ll pick somebody who’s very good.
He pushed back against the negative tone of the current presidential race, arguing the U.S. has the “strongest, most durable economy in the world”.
