Chalmers’ leaner lifts Grizzlies over Pistons 103-101
After falling behind by 13 points in the second half, the Pistons had a 23-2 run to take a 96-88 lead over the Grizzlies with 5:41 remaining Thursday night at the FedEx Forum.
After another “Hawk in the National Basketball Association, the Pistons” Marcus Morris, had the ball stripped on the opposite end of the floor, it ended up in Chalmers’ hands with the fourth-quarter clock quickly making its way toward 0:00 with the game tied at 101, in Memphis.
“I just seen it, and I was able to get to it and get to my good spot and release it on time”, Chalmers told FOX Sports Southeast after hitting the improbable shot. Marc Gasol scored 19 points, grabbed five rebounds, dished out four assists and added three blocks.
Stanley Johnson fueled the Pistons’ run with 11 of his team-high 18 points in the fourth quarter. The Memphis Grizzlies may be playing it cautious, as Barnes was unable to go Tuesday versus the Celtics. He has to be one of the most enigmatic players in the entire league, capable of big moments like this and capable of deservedly getting chewed out by every single one of his teammates. Jeff Green finished with 16. The Grizzlies led 79-71 going into the fourth quarter. At halftime, Memphis led 48-43 and had scored 12 points off 12 Detroit turnovers.
Andre Drummond picked up a double-double with an 11-point, 11-rebound performance.
Jackson later hit a 3-pointer to push the Pistons lead to 21-14.
It was the second time this season the Pistons lost to the Grizzlies (22-19) on a wild finish.
But Chalmers, starting in place of the injured Mike Conley, hurt Pistons on drives to the hoop to score 10 points in the first quarter. He’s starting to get some regular minutes and the Grizzlies may be abandoning their small-ball lineups a little more. Green entered the game shooting 25 percent over the previous six outings.
While Randolph is coming off the bench and Barnes and Conley are in question, another starter’s status is uncertain after Tuesday’s game.
