Gov. Haley, Speaker Ryan offer new GOP answer to Trump
“During anxious times, it can be tempting to follow the siren call of the angriest voices”, she said in her prepared remarks.
After getting Louis’s take, Costello turned back to Shachtman as she recalled: “And lest we forget, Noah, Nikki Haley is conservative”. She said that she feels Trump is just contributing to what she called irresponsible talk.
A day after the Republican South Carolina governor made a jab at Trump and others in urging the country to resist “the angriest voices”, Trump told a crowd here Wednesday, “I am!”
“I like her, she’s a very nice woman, but she’s very weak on the subject of illegal immigration”. “Well, considering I’m leading in the polls by a lot, I wouldn’t say she’s off to a good start” to be his vice presidential candidate, Trump said.
Hewitt asked Coulter what she thought about Cruz’s eligibility to be president and Coulter said, “I’ve always thought he wasn’t natural born”. “Unfortunately Mr. Cruz responded to a media report saying that Donald Trump brought it up, and then of course he went after Donald Trump on Twitter, and that is why we are talking about this today – because Donald Trump has always maintained if you come after me, I am going to attack”. “We have to make sure we’re not a part of that”. That’s not worth it. We want to move America forward.
” Syndicated conservative columnist Charles Krauthammer said immediately after Haley’s remarks, on Fox News Channel, that her response was the best he has ever seen”.
Haley’s speech – probably written at the Republican Governors Association, the Republican National Committee or Mitch McConnell’s office – was so short on conservative substance that it could have been delivered by Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio, Eric Cantor, John Boehner, Mitch McConnell, Reince Priebus, or any one of Washington’s other now-discredited Big Government Republicans.
Do you think Gov. Haley was trying to distance the Republican Party from Donald Trump in her speech? I wonder, though, how angry he would be had he not run for president and instead remained just a world-class tycoon, living a “tremendous” life and financing candidates from both parties in order to promote his business interests.
A Haley adviser involved with preparing the speech told CNN that when the governor accepted the high-profile role, she did so on the condition that the speech would be her own. Take it if you want. Illegal immigration is beyond belief.
Seven candidates will take the main stage in SC, with six focused on how to knock the real-estate tycoon off his perch and finally bring the 2016 campaign to a debate about issues rather than obsession over Trump’s celebrity bombast.
“This is just something that we learned in SC that I’m passing along”, said Haley.
HORSLEY: A White House spokesman praised Haley this afternoon for what he called her courageous willingness to speak out against Trump’s fiery rhetoric.
