49ers Hire Former Eagles Coach Chip Kelly
In all the debates about the 49ers hiring Chip Kelly, one thing stands out the most: What will Kelly and the team do with would-be franchise quarterback Colin Kaepernick? York announced the move on Twitter and so did the team on its Twitter account.
Kelly joins the 49ers after three years with the Philadelphia Eagles.
Kelly faces the daunting challenge of transforming the Niners into an immediate contender again. This team, just needs, if Chip Kelly can get Kaepernick back to the way he was, (Arik) Armstead looked really good.
The 49ers say they will not be holding a news conference on the coaching announcement until next week due to scheduling issues.
“The 49ers fired Jim Tomsula after a 5-11 season in 2015”.
The 49ers had also considered Mike Shanahan on their list but Kelly won the heart of York.
In his 47 games as Eagles head coach, Kelly went 26-21.
Prior to joining the NFL, Kelly flourished at the University of New Hampshire and the University of OR and his teams always have been known for high-powered, fast-paced offenses, something the 49ers are intent on improving after finishing 31st in the league in 2015.
He has since undergone three surgeries – on his shoulder, knee and right thumb – since late November, which had already raised questions about the 49ers’ ability to part with him in the offseason.
“Chip possesses all the qualities we were looking for in our next head coach”, Baalke said in a statement. “…I like what he does holistically for the players, what he’s thinking about bringing the game forward”. Kaepernick is owed $12 million if the team keeps him, but with the hiring of Kelly, who’s proven adept at getting the most out of mobile quarterbacks, it may be a sign that San Francisco is not quitting on the QB. Kelly likes running quarterbacks and Kaepernick likes to run.
He was sacked after the 2008 season as Broncos owner Pat Bowlen felt it was time for another voice.
“The thing I worry about most is Chip Kelly is a very strong personality”, Young said. If he can adapt, then I think this has a chance to be spectacularly successful.
“They have some decisions to make at some key positions, quarterback being the main one”, Kiper added. Kelly, 52, was sacked 15 games into Philadelphia’s 7-9 season but put together back-to-back 10-6 campaigns before that.
