Saoirse Ronan reacts to Oscar nomination
Golden Globe nominee Saoirse Ronan will be making a big screen appearance in Cambridge next week, as Cineseries brings Brooklyn to the city.
While “Brooklyn” scored two major nominations, the brutal frontier saga “The Revenant” leads the 88th annual Academy Awards with 12 nominations, while the acting categories were again filled entirely by white performers.
In addition to the Irish Film Board-funded films, there is further Irish success as Michael Fassbender (pictured) is nominated in the category of Best Actor in a Leading Role for his performance in Danny Boyle’s Steve Jobs.
Saoirse’s appearance on the popular chat show is the latest charm offensive by the Carlow native, who tomorrow will be hoping to pick up a second career Oscar nomination for Brooklyn.
“Room” and “Brooklyn” have been nominated for Best picture and “Stutterer” by Irish director Benjamin Cleary has been nominated for Best live action short.
The Arts Minister Heather Humphreys has congratulated the nominees. They will compete with Sylvester Stallone for Creed and Mark Ruffalo for Spotlight. Also nominated were Tom Hardy (“The Revenant”) and Christian Bale (“The Big Short”).
“Room” is Lenny Abrahamsson’s fifth major movie, some of the more notable of his previous films include the critically acclaimed “Adam & Paul” and “What Richard Did”.
Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs has since redoubled efforts to diversify the academy’s membership, and slated Chris Rock to host this year’s February 28 ceremony. “Best Picture is the best thing you can stick on the poster”. I’m not talking about my writing – I’m talking about the size of the part. “To see how the film has been embraced has been heartwarming”, she said. It secured nods for film editing, original score, sound editing, sound mixing and visual effects. No longer are there years in Irish cinema where there might be one or two you’d bother to go to. But it did make for a heck of an episode, and Irish somehow feels so much more exotic.
