Jewish Extremists Indicted For Deadly Arson Attack On A Family Of Palestinians
Israeli prosecutors brought formal charges Sunday against two Jewish Israelis accused of killing three Palestinians, all members of one family, in an arson attack in July.
Amiram Ben-Uliel a 21-year-old from a Jewish settlement in the West Bank was charged with three counts of racially motivated murder at Lod court near Tel Aviv.
According to France24’s correspondent in Tel Aviv, the indictments were part of a thorough investigation on anti-Arab attacks and more suspects were charged on Sunday ruling. Eighteen-month-old Ali Dawabsheh died in the house at the time of the attack, while his parents, Riham and Saad, died from their injuries later on.
Apparently, Ben-Uliel was indicted after he admitted to the attack, saying that he sprayed graffiti on the Palestinian family’s home before throwing a petrol bomb through a bedroom window.
Palestinian elections have not been held in a decade due to the bitter split between Hamas and Abbas’ Fatah, based in the occupied West Bank.
According to an initial Israel Defense Forces investigation into the incident, the assailant got out of a vehicle at the junction, approached a group of reserve soldiers who were stationed there, and stabbed one of them in the face and hand.
Saad Dawabsha’s brother, Naser, said he hoped the defendants would receive the maximum penalty, but was sceptical of Israel’s seriousness in prosecuting the case.
We want a real judgement for those murders and to put them (the perpetrators) in jail for a long time, to demolish their homes and to deal with them like they (Israeli authorities) are dealing with the Palestinians.
The Duma case has caused an uproar among the far right in Israel, with lawyers representing the suspects accusing Shin Bet interrogators of torturing and abusing them in order to extract confessions.
It said that Israeli police registered the attack against an “unknown” suspect, although surveillance cameras in the area prove that it was carried out by settlers.
A court charged two Israelis on Sunday over a firebombing past year that killed a Palestinian couple and their toddler, in an attack that sparked condemnation globally.
In a wave of Palestinian attacks since October 1 – including stabbings, auto rammings and gunfire targeting security forces and civilians – 22 Israelis, an American and an Eritrean have been killed. This, compared to 65.5% in the Arab Israeli sector.
The statement added that the group “condemns these heinous acts of unadulterated murder and will continue to work together with the security forces to ensure a peaceful future for all the residents of Judea and Samaria”, an Israeli phrase for the West Bank.
