PS4 Was the Best-Selling Console in December and All of 2015
The NPD sales report for 2015 are in and the PS4 was the best selling console not only in December, but the calendar year of 2015 too.
The platform has managed to perform very well during the Christmas period, adding 5.7 million in sales to some already impressive numbers, and Sony says that it is not saying a decline in the current pace of sales. Unsurprisingly, December was the best month on record for software for the newest consoles. Sony recently trademarked the term “VRPG”, which may refer to a virtual reality roleplaying game now in production, and if that is the case then Microsoft and Nintendo will have to present equally compelling reasons to remain loyal to each company’s consoles.
Making it back-to-back first place finishes, and ending 2015 on a high note, the PlayStation 4 was the #1 selling system in the United States for both December 2015 and all of 2015, according to NPD data, Sony announced today. Even so, hardware sales fell 6 percent during December and they were down 4 percent for the year when compared to 2014. PS4 also had the strongest third-party software sales in 2015 in the USA, according to NPD.
Corporate VP of Xbox marketing, Mike Nichols, wrote in a statement shared with GameSpot: “Thanks to our fans, continued support for the most critically-acclaimed holiday lineup of exclusives in Xbox history made December 2015 the best month yet for Xbox Live global engagement and Xbox One sales in the US”. Gamers can expect 2016 to bring some changes, but for now, it’s simply more of the same.
