The Revenant leads Oscar nominations with 12 nods

The only best-picture contender without a white protagonist is “Straight Outta Compton”, which has an outside shot of joining the favourites. The other nominees include “Room”, “Brooklyn” “The Big Short”, and “Bridge of Spies”. He’s now one of just a handful of performers who have been nominated twice for the same role, and the distance between his movies is far and away the longest.

We’ve already run through the disappointing side of this year’s selections by pointing out those who were snubbed, but now we’d like to look on the lighter side and point out some of the surprises, especially Mad Max: Fury Road finding glory with no fewer than 10 nominations.

Soon after Thursday’s Academy Awards list was revealed, criticism of the lack of actors of color among the nominations emerged, with last year’s hashtag #OscarsSoWhite revived. Scott, 78, has been nominated three times and never won. The British star was the surprise victor in the category at the Golden Globes and will be up against Blanchett’s co-star Rooney Mara for Carol, as well as Redmayne’s co-star in The Danish Girl, Alicia Vikander.

Two-time Oscar victor Cate Blanchett has a shot at number three with a Best Actress nomination for “Carol”. All 20 of the acting nominees are white.

Best actor nominations went to DiCaprio, Matt Damon for “The Martian”, Bryan Cranston for “Trumbo, ” Michael Fassbender for “Steve Jobs“, and Eddie Redmayne for “The Danish Girl“.

Jennifer Jason Leigh picked up a (deserved) supporting actress nomination, and Ennio Morricone’s score and Robert Richardson’s cinematography were honored, but not being nominated for best picture, director, or original screenplay? Two years later, she once again got a nod in that category for her performance in “Silver Linings Playbook” – and won. That being said I do not think any other film will be able to match Mad Max in visual effects, film editing and production design. Charlie Puth, which featured in Furious 7, from the Original Song category proves that incredible chart success doesn’t matter to the Academy, not one bit. The black cast and director of hip hop biopic “Straight Outta Compton” were also left out of the race. It’s his 50th nomination, extending his record as the most-nominated person alive.
