San Francisco 49ers hire Chip Kelly as head coach
Part of Kelly’s fallout in Philadelphia stemmed from his quest to gain more power. Kaepernick’s $11.9 million salary for 2016 becomes fully guaranteed for injury come April 1, and there had been belief the team might try to trade him or release him.
Australian fans will be waiting to see whether he has any interest in retaining and giving an opportunity to Jarryd Hayne, while USA fans will wonder whether he can revive the form of quarterback Colin Kaepernick, whose star dropped so dramatically this season that he was benched for back-up Blaine Gabbert.
Kaepernick has been in Colorado for almost two weeks, having had surgery for a torn ligament in his right thumb and an arthroscopic procedure in his left knee. I’m not trying to make excuses, but we weren’t as bad as some of the numbers look.
It makes sense then for a team that struggled on both sides of the ball, but especially on offense, to bring in a coach who is known for his offensive genius, in Chip Kelly.
The other was a tall, somewhat lanky quarterback who had a better future as a hard-throwing baseball pitcher – or at least, that’s what folks on the sideline assured me. It’s an exciting offense. “I know that’s the easy and convenient analysis after Chip Kelly’s hiring by the 49ers, but in this case there are too many connected dots to ignore”. SF 49ers CEO Jed York announced the news via Twitter. Before that, he went 46-7 in four seasons coaching the University of Oregon. “He turned things around at OR, and he’s going to turn the 49ers around in a heartbeat, ” he said.
So I guess they’ll start picking players they can turn into droids and program them to just do what they’re asked.
ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. isn’t anticipating the 49ers to stray from their draft-day strategies.
Said NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock: “I think the system will be a fit for him”.
With Trent Baalke as the GM of the San Francisco 49ers, no decent head coaching candidate wants to go there.
Deciding on the quarterback will be a major decision for Kelly in the coming months.
York told the media in a press conference on January 4 that he was willing to spend whatever it takes to get the team back to championship caliber, but will spend it wisely.
The offense needs more than a capable quarterback, and Kiper scouted out possible help.
Davis, 26, was a first-round pick by the 49ers in 2010.
