Tom Coughlin drops out of Eagles race, according to sources
The last guy they met with was Pederson, offensive coordinator of the Kansas City Chiefs. With two games remaining in that year, the Giants fired LeRoy Andrews as head coach and replaced him with co-coaches. Given the teams looking for a head coach right now, the Eagles seem to provide the best situation for Coughlin, but it seems more and more likely that he will not coach at all in 2016. If Philbin does in fact join the Giants, New York will have a new head coach with two coordinators who have head coaching experience, which isn’t exactly a bad situation at all.
#Eagles talks with Tom Coughlin have intensified, as well. McAdoo was hired as an offensive quality control coach by the Saints in 2004 when McCarthy was offensive coordinator there, and then he went with McCarthy in 2005 to San Francisco to be offensive line coach and quality control coordinator under McCarthy as offensive coordinator.
“I’m excited for the Giants organization and for the team”.
Surprising news out of Philly: Tom Coughlin has asked that his name be taken out of consideration to become the next head coach of the Eagles.
With the Dolphins hiring Adam Gase and the Giants reportedly retaining Ben McAdoo, it appears the Eagles have locked in on a top choice to fill their head coaching vacancy – Tom Coughlin.
Only three other known candidates interviewed for the Eagles’ position: running backs coach Duce Staley, offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur and Pederson.
Coughlin guided the Giants to a 102-90 (.531) record.
This comes after Philadelphia had turned its attention squarely to the former New York Giants coach, sources told Schefter earlier Thursday.
The Giants have liked what McAdoo has done with the offense the past two seasons, helping two-time Super Bowl MVP quarterback Eli Manning get back on track. Former player and current ESPN analyst Louis Riddick, like Manning and Rodgers, had immensely high praise for McAdoo, according to Paul Schwartz of The New York Post.
Coughlin had a long and successful tenure in NY, but he missed the playoffs in each of his final four seasons as the team’s head coach and this past season, he led them to a 6-10 record and that came as a disappointment.
But the 38-year-old has never been a head coach at any level.
The Eagles have interest in Teryl Austin, defensive coordinator of the Detroit Lions, also per reports.
