Tom Coughlin Leaves Door Open On Coaching Again
He went on to thank team owners John Mara and Steve Tisch and general manager Jerry Reese, along with his players and extended Giants’ family, for their encouragement over his esteemed tenure with Big Blue.
“Judy and I together a long time ago, we don’t say ‘goodbye, ‘” Coughlin said.
Coughlin, 69, has coached the Giants since 2004, leading them to two Super Bowl championships.
For the first time in his National Football League career, Eli Manning will play for a coach other than Tom Coughlin. We’ve been friends a long time, and I’m sad, but I’m happy because it’s a new adventure. The Giants finished at 6-10, and Reese said the team is not too far away from contending for another title despite posting losing records the past three seasons. “That is a tribute to our players and staff, and it was truly fulfilling to be the leader of those teams”.
When asked if his coaching flame has gone out, he said, “not necessarily, thanks for asking”.
Coughlin said he contends the higher ground, and greater objective in football was team – winning the right way. He said he will find a way to stay involved in the game and with players, because his wife wouldn’t want him home for more than 48 hours. I appreciate the way he works, I think he appreciates the way I handle my business and play quarterback and prepare and get ready. His longtime coach assured him, however, “Eli, it’s not you”. I understand the Belichick has his Patriots in the Super Bowl race every year, winning four of them. “It’s been an honor and a privilege for me to be the 16th head coach of the New York Giants”. “I have a lot of respect for Tom and his family, the way he approaches his job, the way he coaches”.
As expected, Tom Coughlin will not be coaching the New York Giants in 2017.
Clearly the question was related to Saints coach Sean Payton (although no names were named), a former Giants offensive coordinator and prime candidate to replace Coughlin should the Saints be willing to let him walk for some light (second round?) compensation. When we win, you guys win.
In a what-might-have-been season in the mediocre NFC East, the Giants’ failures came down to, as Coughlin often said, “finishing”.
The Giants qualified for the postseason with a victory in their penultimate game of the 2007 regular season, then won three consecutive road playoff games to advance to Super Bowl XLII.
