Katina Smith, Mother Of Denver Broncos’ Wide Receiver Demaryius Thomas, To
Fellow Broncos receiver Emmanuel Sanders, whose locker is next to Thomas’, said their Broncos teammates “all know how excited he is for her to be at a game and see him play”.
Thomas’ hope is that the wait might be over and his mother barring any setbacks will be able to finally see him play in Sunday’s AFC divisional-round game against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Sports Authority Field at Mile High Stadium. She has since been released from a Georgia halfway house and Thomas said a ban restricting her ability to travel has now been lifted. When Thomas was 12 years old, she was sentenced to 20 years in a federal prison on drug trafficking charges.
“I know she’d be excited”, Thomas told reporters Wednesday, per USA TODAY. “It’d mean a lot for her to see my first game live”, Demaryius Thomas was quoted.
Smith was originally scheduled to be released from prison in 2017, but when her sentence was commuted, she went to a halfway house in Georgia. Thomas’ grandmother, Minnie Smith was said to have been arrested and convicted at the same time. With extra cash in his wallet, Thomas made one of his first purchases a cell phone for his mom, who he said texts him “all the time”.
It’s about a mother seeing her son do what her son does best for the first time. Hopefully, if his mother is able to make it, Thomas will be able to run some of the long returns he is known for with Katina Smith looking on proudly from the stands.
