Dave Tippett: Coyotes & Glendale resolve arena deal – Fantasy Hockey Breaking
Glendale reduces its annual payment to IceArizona by $8.5 million, though the actual savings are less than that thanks to the loss of revenue streams. So, it’ll be good for the Coyotes to get out of the court rooms and turn their focus back to hockey operations.
“This revised agreement represents a positive outcome for both the city and the Coyotes”, said Glendale acting city manager, Dick Bowers in a joint statement issued by the city and the Coyotes.
City leaders will vote to approve the settlement on Friday morning.
City council is Glendale, 30 minutes from downtown Phoenix, will weigh an amendment designed to keep the Coyotes at GRA for at least two more seasons. “That’s important for business and it’s important to our citizens”. The team then sued the city after it voted to cancel the 15-year, $225 million contract.
The Arizona Coyotes and the city of Glendale have reached an agreement to keep the troubled franchise in town for at least two more seasons.
“We have come up with a resolution that works for both sides and is best for the team, our fans, the city and most importantly the taxpayers”, said Coyotes Co-Owner, President and CEO Anthony LeBlanc. But given how hard they’ve been yanked around the past few years, we’ll understand if they curb their enthusiasm until all details have been officially released and the vote, scheduled for Friday, June 24, has passed the amendments to the original deal. After what the City of Glendale pulled, I doubt the Coyotes want to be associated with them for too much longer and of course, Glendale is just a bad location for the team. This is something he’s done since before IceArizona purchased the Coyotes from the National Hockey League. Expect to see him adjust at the AHL level, but his knack for getting under an opponent’s skin and ability to drive to the net every time he’s on the ice suggest that Bunting could be in the Coyotes lineup before his entry level deal expires. He usually throws “Glendale” into his long term comments. He simply left it at “the valley” and “Arizona”. Glendale had sparked controversy – and plenty of talk of a franchise move – by killing the lease. The four drafted skaters who have signed this summer – Ryan MacInnis, Christian Dvorak, Dylan Strome, and now Bunting – all project to be pricey but talented skaters down the line; Arizona is holding on to its talent, and that’s a breath of fresh air for Coyotes fans everywhere. Though both parties really do not like each other, the economic stakes are far too high for either party to acquiesce.
The immediate impact: The Coyotes will play in Gila River Arena this season. Should the Coyotes eventually leave Gila River Arena, two major questions arise.
