Giants: McAdoo ‘has earned his stripes’
On Thursday, Ben McAdoo, the team’s offensive coordinator and play-caller for the last two seasons, became the 17th coach in franchise history.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Thursday reported that the Eagles “have turned their attention” towards Coughlin’s direction, before later releasing news that Coughlin removed his name from consideration.
Coughlin could be waiting for the right situation, or at almost 70 he could be ready to retire.
“He has demonstrated some of that intensity, exhibiting a Coughlin-level focus during practices and in meetings”. There are just three National Football League head coaching jobs open: Eagles, Titans, Bucs. If you end up with your fourth or fifth option in a year that’s viewed as a weak coaching crop, that’s less than ideal. He thought his first interview with the Eagles went well per sources.
Coughlin the only head coach to fail to reach the playoffs in four straight seasons after winning a Super Bowl. It seemed like the kind of moves teams make because they feel pressured to do something after a losing season, instead of considering the right course of action.
As far as roster construction goes, an issue in recent seasons, McAdoo said that he and GM Jerry Reese will have an open dialogue about the players on the roster but made it clear that Reese would pick the players and he would coach them. “I think Coach McAdoo and I work well together”, Manning told WFAN.
Many believe Coughlin would have been fired had he not resigned.
The Eagles have been seeking a replacement for Chip Kelly, who was sacked five days before Philadelphia’s season-ending victory over Coughlin and the Giants.
“He’s an old school coach but a good one, players will still listen to him”.
The Giants interviewed McAdoo, defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Teryl Austin, Jacksonville Jaguars assistant head coach Doug Marrone, former Atlanta Falcons head coach Mike Smith, and Gase for the job. The Eagles are hot on the trail of a grandfatherly figure to be their next head coach. Coughlin fits the bill, as exemplified by the his final act as the resigning coach of the Giants, when he delivered a press conference bathed in empathy – his connection exemplified in Eli Manning’s near-tears reaction.
