Bill Belichick acknowledges Tom Coughlin as his Giants tenure ends
Tom Coughlin, formerly of the New York Giants, is one of only two head coaches to win multiple Super Bowls.
“It has been an honor and a privilege to serve as head coach of the New York Football Giants”.
So a man that matched wits with him in two Super Bowls and got the better of it should be given the same treatment.
Earlier on Monday, following a team meeting, an emotional Eli Manning told reporters that it was the team that let Coughlin down, leading to this season’s 6-10 record.
There is some optimism going forward, as Reese has never before hired a head coach as GM of the Giants-Coughlin had been there since 2004-and so the team is putting their trust in him to help do a good job and turn things around.
“It’s up to you now to get it fixed because the last three years are just not acceptable”, Mara said during his end-of-season press conference.
The Giants have not yet revealed who will replace Coughlin.
When Mara and Tisch speak fondly of Coughlin, we’ll know it’s from the heart.
He said it’s not a sad occasion and takes pride in having led the team to three Super Bowls. You did it the right way Coach.
Team president and CEO John Mara expressed his faith in increasingly-embattled general manager Jerry Reese during his State of the Giants address on Tuesday morning.
Upon his arrival, the Giants acquired quarterback Eli Manning in a draft-day trade with the Chargers, and created a pairing that would not be broken for twelve years.
After making the playoffs just once (2011, when the Giants won the Super Bowl) in the past seven seasons, it’s probably best for both the team and coach to part ways.
Where the Giants go from here is uncertain.
Coughlin was full of energy talking about his time with the Giants, the difficulties of the last few seasons and much more during the session, which naturally started five minutes ahead of the scheduled time. Bears offensive guru Adam Gase, who is to meet with Eagles management, may be brought in, too.
Coughlin’s future was the main topic as players cleaned out their lockers Monday.
He also did not rule out the possibility he might coach another team in 2016.
Justin Tuck played for Tom Coughlin for nine years.
Coughlin’s final note of appreciation for Manning was to compliment him for the kind of work ethic a tireless coach like Coughlin could truly appreciate. He didn’t have a lot of talent on the roster, and his defence spent the first two months with defensive star Jason Pierre-Paul sidelined by a July 4 fireworks mishap that mangled his right hand. He also won a total of 8 playoff games and 3 division titles.
