Ben McAdoo says Giants need to reload, not rebuild
They will formally introduce him at a 10:30 a.m. ET news conference Friday morning.
As far as roster construction goes, an issue in recent seasons, McAdoo said that he and GM Jerry Reese will have an open dialogue about the players on the roster but made it clear that Reese would pick the players and he would coach them. They met again Wednesday, when he also spoke with team chairman Steve Tisch and treasurer Jonathan Tisch.
It also may have come as a surprise that Mike Francesa did not receive much consideration for the job as he had been offered the job before Coughlin was hired, he is younger than Coughlin and is not now coaching an National Football League team.
“The first thing we have to do is get Ben some players”, Giants co-owner John Mara said. Ben has been preparing for this opportunity since he started coaching, and he has earned his stripes every step of the way.
The Giants have something to prove. Why that happened nearly certainly occupied a portion of his talk with the Eagles along with some of his coaching blunders, and the Odell Beckham Jr. blowup that this past season left the Giants with a 6-10 record.
The Giants scored just 294 points the season before McAdoo was hired to run the offense. Manning has had two excellent statistical seasons under McAdoo’s direction, with his interceptions going down and his completion percentage going up.
“I’m excited”, quarterback Eli Manning said of McAdoo’s appointment in a statement.
“Chip possesses all the qualities we were looking for in our next head coach”, Baalke said. Giants fans will be happy to know Tomlin won the Super Bowl in just his second year with the team.
“I have great respect for Coach McAdoo and the whole coaching staff”, Manning said January 4. “I’m excited to continue to work with him and grow within this offense, and get this organization back where it needs to be”.
On today’s edition of NFC East Intel we look at the Eagles’ head coaching search, the Giants likely hire of Ben McAdoo as head coach and the Cowboys possibly drafting a defensive end early. If not for a few play calling and clock management mistakes, the Giants could’ve been in a much different position, and maybe Coughlin would’ve remained a head coach.
According to Dan Graziano of ESPN, offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo will be promoted and become the 17th coach in franchise history.
The team could make an official announcement on Thursday. Kansas City plays at New England on Saturday.
