New York Giants interview Bears offensive coordinator Gase
The former Chicago Bears offensive coordinator has reportedly signed a five-year deal to succeed Dan Campbell, who stood in as interim coach after Joe Philbin’s departure in October.
The Browns confirmed they have interviewed candidates in the following order: Gase, Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Teryl Austin, Jacksonville Jaguars assistant head coach/offensive line coach Doug Marrone and Henderson. You’ve got your work cut out for you.
As such, the Bears are now in the market for a new offensive coordinator, although GM Ryan Pace believes the presence of head coach John Fox will facilitate that process.
“I really enjoy that aspect of putting the game plan together with the offensive staff, so going into this season, that’s how we’re going to start”, Gase said.
“Probably some of the drawback [last year] is that he had Peyton and people were like, ‘Hey a lot of people can do it with Peyton, ‘ ” Cutler said in a recent interview. It might be too much to ask of a new first time head coach to retain a man who is so revered in the organization.
From Marshall, Gase went to Michigan State University, before following then-head coach Nick Saban to Louisiana State University to become an assistant at that school in 2000. Cutler has spoken very highly of Loggains and handing him the play calling duties would be the easiest way to maintain the continuity built up in 2015.
A year ago Gase followed head coach John Fox from Denver to Chicago after interviewing for head jobs with the Bears, 49ers, Bills and Falcons. However, the Dolphins and Gase said that’s not a major concern. He has interviewed for four of the NFL’s seven head coach openings this year. Gase and the Dolphins are making progress and could have a decision as early as Saturday, according to Schefter. And once he gets the Dolphins to the postseason, owner Stephen Ross expects them to win. That approach hasn’t worked with the coaching carousel in Miami, where none of Gase’s eight most recent predecessors had previous National Football League head coaching experience.
During Gase’s single season with the Bears, they won only six games and ranked 17th in offensive points. Working with Gase, quarterback Jay Cutler posted a career-high 92.3 passer rating and reduced his interceptions from 18 in 2014 to 11.
