Former Philadelphia Eagles coach hired by San Francisco 49ers
San Francisco is requiring Kelly to only serve as a head coach and he will not be in control of personnel.
Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly watches the action from the sidelines in the first half of an NFL football game against the Carolina Panthers in Charlotte, N.C. The San Francisco 49ers have hired Chip Kelly as their new head coach. He was 26-21 overall in Philly. He went 10-6 in both of his first two seasons at the helm. Kelly had a disappointing season with the Eagles. I’m not trying to make excuses, but we weren’t as bad as some of the numbers look.
Despite his struggles this year, the hiring of Kelly has immediately boosted the odds for the 49ers to win a championship next season. Terms of the Kelly deal with the 49ers are forthcoming.
“Chip’s passion for the game and vision for the future of this team clearly stood out to us during the search process”, Baalke continued.
Team chief executive Jed York tweeted the news that he and 49ers general manager Trent Baalke had selected Kelly, whose Eagles went 7-9 last season, to replace the fired Jim Tomsula.
Kelly deserved most of the blame; he selected the players who were cut and signed.
Following his collapse with the Philadelphia Eagles, and his firing, Chip Kelly is back to coaching in the NFL. “…I like what he does holistically for the players, what he’s thinking about bringing the game forward”.
Kelly was criticized for the release of play-making receiver DeSean Jackson in 2014, trading productive running back LeSean McCoy before this season and choosing quarterback Sam Bradford over Nick Foles in a trade with the Rams. “Chip Kelly knows how to win”. That could allow Kelly to focus only on coaching.
On the phone Thursday, Craig reiterated his endorsement for the former Eagles coach and downplayed Kelly’s clashes with players in Philadelphia. At Oregon, he had Marcus Mariota, and, at the 49ers, he could have Colin Kaepernick, whose tenure is in doubt after he got benched at midseason. Therefore, it won’t be surprising if he makes major changes to the San Francisco roster ahead of the new season.
Regardless, Kelly surely isn’t getting minimum wage for the next two years – which means that his ability to get another job right away will result in significant cash savings for the guy who fired him only 17 days ago.
