In surprise move, Tom Coughlin will not coach the Philadelphia Eagles
McAdoo’s offence has been one of the few bright spots for the team the past two years.
Forget the father figure type. “To see that he’s put himself in (a head coaching) position is no surprise”.
The New York Giants are expected to promote offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo to head coach, according to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport.
Coughlin’s career coaching record stands at 170-150 through long stints with the Giants and Jacksonville Jaguars.
The Eagles’ coaching search took an abrupt turn on Thursday with Tom Coughlin reportedly backing out of consideration. It would be Coughlin’s second interview as he met with the Eagles last Saturday.
Humorously, the opening line of his entry states that Coughlin is an American Football coach “who will hopefully be hired by the Philadelphia Eagles”. The Panthers defeated the Giants 38-35.
The Giants interviewed six men after Coughlin stepped down.
It is believed that McAdoo plans to retain Steve Spagnuolo as defensive coordinator. The Miami Dolphins just hired Adam Gase (former Bears OC) to be their HC and he’s one year younger than McAdoo. Mara and Reese interviewed five other candidates before settling on McAdoo.
Pederson, the offensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs, has accepted an offer to become Philadelphia’s coach, a person with knowledge of the decision told AP on Thursday night.
McAdoo has not served as a head coach at any level, but it’s been pointed out that the Giants also elevated a relatively obscure coordinator to the top job in late 1982, when they named future Hall of Famer Bill Parcells head coach.
McAdoo is set to be Coughlin’s successor per reports.
The Eagles initially were interested in Dirk Koetter, offensive coordinator of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Now McAdoo has to find a way to channel the respect that Coughlin had commanded while somehow making the Giants his. In the postseason he led them to an 8-3 mark and two Super Bowl titles.
Including his time with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Coughlin’s 170 victories are tied with Mike Shanahan for 11th on the all-time National Football League list.
As far as roster construction goes, an issue in recent seasons, McAdoo said that he and GM Jerry Reese will have an open dialogue about the players on the roster but made it clear that Reese would pick the players and he would coach them.
Roseman’s got power again and not likely eager to give up a ton of control to the next coach (he knows how that works out).
