Cruz’s citizenship again questioned during Republican debate
The others fighting to break out and ABC’s Tom llamas was there in Charleston for all of it. Good morning, Tom.
Here are some other key takeaways from the Thursday night debate. Ted Cruz’s eligibility to serve as president, telling his rival that his birth in Canada leaves “a big question mark on your head”.
Bush again took on Trump over his call to ban Muslims from entering the USA, arguing it would stop Arab nations from joining a coalition to defeat the Islamic State. He said he had no regrets about the proposal and noted his poll numbers went up after he announced the plan. “But the poll numbers have”.
He was born in Calgary to an American mother and a Cuban father. If a soldier has a child overseas that child is a natural born citizen. Reporter: Some candidates growing frustrated.
The first round of statements that fact checkers quickly debunked were the comments made by Cruz and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.
Senator Marco Rubio said Obama had played down the threat of the Islamic State. Marco Rubio (R-Florida) and Cruz aired out a fight that has always been brewing on the campaign trail.
Iran’s seizure and quick release of 10 US Navy sailors, was another major talking point among the candidates, who lined up to paint Obama as weak and delusional on the topic of national security.
Likely Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton also came in for criticism. There are many, many wonderful, wonderful working men and women in the state of NY.
Cruz earlier this week said Trump represented “New York values,” questioning his conservative credentials. Reporter: Trump taking that personally and invoking 9/11.
“And we rebuilt Downtown Manhattan, and everybody in the world watched and everybody in the world loved NY and loved New Yorkers. I don’t like that”, Trump said amidst laughter from the audience.
Indeed Rubio, who is polling a respectable third behind the outsiders leading the race, Donald Trump and Senator Ted Cruz, proved to be effective and combative throughout this sixth debate of the season. George. Okay, Tom, thanks.
“I think most people know exactly what NY values are”, Cruz said. Who got the better of it?
At times, the contest between some of the more mainstream candidates seeking to emerge as an alternative to Trump and Cruz was just as fiery, particularly between Florida Sen. They dominated this debate but trump clearly came out on top.
But Trump, who was born and raised in Queens, New York, stepped away from his usual flippant outbursts and gave a collected response when he was given the chance to confront Cruz about his remarks face-to-face. “But if that is the best hit New York Timeshas got, they better go back to the well”.
“Despite Donald Trump’s bromance with Vladimir Putin …” It’s certainly not a debate that ph.d.
“You are an American, as is everyone on this stage”, Cruz said. I thought he did because I think he rattled Donald Trump.
Cruz forcefully responded to Trump’s accusations that he isn’t eligible to be president because he was born in Canada – a controversy that Trump has only recently embraced. “People are not going to like him based on that performance last night”.
Rubio fired back by accusing Cruz of switching positions on issues, preferring for the most part to stick to his trademark rapid fire, policy-focused answers. Reporter: He sure did.
When Cruz shot back, “I appreciate you dumping your oppo research file on the debate stage”, Rubio was ready with a sharp retort: “It’s your record”. “I said temporarily. I didn’t say permanently”.
“I don’t want to hurt anybody”. Bush said. “What we need to do is destroy ISIS”. Yeah, yeah, yeah. What does that mean? The controversial celebrity has long led in national polls and his campaign shows no signs of collapsing before Iowa becomes the first state to vote in a long nominating process.
As Clinton’s lead dwindles, Trump’s lead continues to rise.
“Here’s the problem. We’re running”.
