Democratic Candidate Bernie Sanders Attacks Hillary Clinton in a Sharp Note
Sanders said the law would also target shadow banks.
The room vibrated with the sound of screams and noisemakers that are probably more at home on a soccer field than the ballroom of the MGM Grand. Polls have shown Sanders leading in New Hampshire, his neighbor to the east, giving Clinton little margin for error here.
SANDERS: Well, actually they are not.
Former Clinton donor George Stephanopoulos on Wednesday grilled the only serious opponent to the Democratic frontrunner. Obama won the state in both 2008 and 2012 but it was fiercely contested in both campaigns.
And in a pre-buttal to Sanders’ speech, Clinton chief financial officer Gary Gensler, the former head of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, prodded Sanders to endorse Clinton’s Wall Street plan.
Sanders claims it’s because she is too friendly with Wall Street. “Because you are the first line of defense”. If anything, it turns them off. “Politician” is a dirty word to most Americans, and “practical progressive” just reeks of the very sort of characterless political pandering Clinton’s critics hate about her. Democrats need a high voter turnout to win. Clinton pledged that voters can “count on me to stand my ground especially when it comes to… powerful interests”, and pointed to the spending against her. “Ask yourself this: if the Republicans weren’t anxious, why are hedge fund billionaires already running ads against me?”
As she spoke, the crowd remained divided.
His supporters are substantial, and they are vocal.
“Some of them might not have been to a rally before”, noted a Sanders supporter and volunteer, Peggy Bennink, 69, of Summerland. “But the vast majority of the people understand, in my state, and I think around the country, that it’s imperative that we do everything we can to keep guns out of the hands of people who should not have them”.
ZARROLI: At another point, Sanders seemed to aim a dart at his rival, Hillary Clinton.
“Not one major Wall Street executive has been prosecuted for causing the near collapse of our entire economy”, Sanders said before describing some of the biggest crimes committed by financial institutions in recent years.
And while Sanders has been able to fire up young and apolitical people, he’s had a harder time exciting African-Americans and other minorities, who will be crucial to any Democrat’s chances of winning the general election in November. She responded by stating that she has “just as much passion as reflected in her proposal to deal with the financial industry”; she also vowed not to raise taxes on households making less than $250,000 annually. “It will take new leadership to break 35 years of gridlock on immigration”, he said. Taxpayers shouldn’t “pay for Donald Trump’s kids to go to college for free”, Clinton said.
“I’m glad Bernie Sanders is out there fighting to hold the big banks accountable, to make our economy safer, and to stop the Republicans from rigging the system even more in Wall Street’s favor”, Warren wrote. It is the rule. Analysts say Sanders plans to break up the large banks would be hard to achieve and is not the only way to limit their size or future bailouts. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) to reinstate the Glass-Steagall Act, which separated commercial and investment banking.
“My experience is different from my competitors”, O’Malley said.
“All of us want to make sure that we defeat right wing extremism that we make certain that no Republican becomes president of the United States”, Sanders told Nevada Democrats gathered at a dinner organized by retiring Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid.
