Ricky Gervais would also like Caitlyn Jenner to host the Golden Globes
Caitlyn Jenner seems to be shrugging off the jokes Ricky Gervais made at her expense at last Sunday’s Golden Globe Awards.
While many appeared to take Gervais’ unique brand of humour with a grain of salt, some viewers expressed their disappointment via Twitter over Gervais’ controversial joke about Caitlyn Jenner’s vehicle accident in February 2015. “We’ll solve that problem…”
“Suggesting a joke about Caitlin (sic) Jenner is automatically transphobic is like suggesting a joke about Bill Cosby is automatically racist”, he tweeted. You have every right to be offended.
“What a year she’s had!” he continued.
Jenner has recently been criticized for her statements on women and marriage equality, as well as her support of the Republican party.
During the awards ceremony, Gervais took a dig at the former Olympic athlete, who was known as Bruce Jenner before her transition, saying: “I’ve changed”.
Meeting young trans people through her show, however, has afforded Jenner a new perspective on transgender issues and how she can continue to increase awareness and representation in the community and in pop culture.
“I’ve changed”, he began.
Gervais reminded others that those who are easily offended by his jokes are the ones making him popular: “Don’t offended people realise they are doing my marketing for me”.
One commentator said: “Ricky Gervais toeing the line towards transphobia with a odd mention of Caitlyn Jenner”.
In actuality, his joke isn’t so much transphobic as it is purely misogynistic… So to promote I Am Cait’s March 6 return, Jenner offered herself up for a rare Q&A with reporters.
Jenner was sued by one of the families involved in the crash, but she was cleared of criminal wrongdoing and not charged with vehicular manslaughter.
