El Chapo TV Series Coming to Univision
For one USA retailer is already trying to cash-in on the fashion choices of Mexican drug baron El Chapo, who was recaptured on Friday.
Guzman’s powerful Sinaloa cartel smuggles multi-ton shipments of cocaine and marijuana as well as manufacturing and transporting methamphetamines and heroin, mostly to the U.S. He is wanted in various U.S. states and his July escape deeply embarrassed the government of President Enrique Pena Nieto and strained ties between the countries. The process could take months, and he would have the right to appeal.
Corchado says Penn was wrong to waste the opportunity to ask some hard questions, and wrong to agree not to ask follow-up questions, and wrong to allow Guzman to edit the final product.
Chicago, which in 2013 dubbed Guzman its first Public Enemy No. 1 since Al Capone, has a sweeping 2009 indictment against him, including several counts of conspiring to smuggle and distribute drugs, as well as money laundering charges.
Guzman is wanted in a half-dozen U.S. states. The magazine article by Penn was published on Saturday.
Attorney General Arely Gomez said on Friday that Guzman had met with unnamed actors and producers to discuss making a biopic about himself, and that it was part of a “new line of investigation”.
Mexican officials say information about that meeting helped them locate the Sinaloa group chief. Republican Party presidential candidate, Senator Marco Rubio, called it “grotesque”.
Other than an email to the Associated Press saying he has nothing to hide regarding the interview, Penn has not spoken out yet about his sit-down with the drug lord.
Penn said the interview was planned by del Castillo. “I have a fleet of submarines, airplanes, trucks and boats”.
It took the Marines 90 minutes to find the tunnel entrance, giving Guzman a crucial headstart.
“You’ll see when you come”, Guzman, who went by the name “Papa” in the messages, wrote on Sept.26, just over two months after his escape from a maximum-security prison. The government was praised for its aggressive push against Mexico’s top drug traffickers, however.
The story was scripted by Lopez Lopez, once a member of Colombia’s Norte del Valle cartel who did some jail time in the United States for drug trafficking.
There’s often politicking involved in these decisions, and deference is sometimes paid to the office that filed its case first, said Marcos Jimenez, a former USA attorney in Miami who oversaw drug cases involving extradited defendants. Five of the hitmen were killed in the shootout, one of them falling from the roof down to a patio and another escaping outside before dying on the street.
One troop was wounded and was on the ground. Six people were arrested at the scene.
In the end, Guzman narrowly escaped. At the time, they said he suffered injuries to the leg and face as he evaded capture. He was not recaptured until 2014.
