“It’s actually worse than a year ago”. All 20 acting nominees are white. Once again, #OscarsSoWhite was trending on social media.
There were also nods for Welsh actor Christian Bale for The Big Short and Wolf Hall star Mark Rylance for Bridge Of Spies.
Along with Mara and McAdams, the best supporting actress nominees were Alicia Vikander (“The Danish Girl”), Jennifer Jason Leigh (“The Hateful Eight”) and Kate Winslet (“Steve Jobs”), her seventh nod. Will Smith (a recent Golden Globe nominee) was also shut out for controversial football movie “Concussion”.
We understand that picking nominees is a tough task, but 2015 was one of the best years for black filmmakers and entertainers.
On the other hand, such crowd-pleasing performers as Damon, Stallone, DiCaprio and Lawrence got selected in the performing categories.
The nominees for best original screenplay are “Spotlight”, “Ex Machina”, “Inside Out”, “Bridge of Spies” and “Straight Outta Compton”. Aside from these exceptions, the unbearable whiteness of the nominations speaks volumes on the glacial pace of change in Hollywood. Only Walt Disney received more nominations; the studio founder had 59.

As expected, Pixar’s “Inside Out” landed a best animated feature nod, as did the Charlie Kaufman-penned “Anomalisa”, “Shaun the Sheep Movie”, “Boy and the World” and “When Marnie Was There”.
The Canada/United Kingdom/Ireland co-production Brooklyn picked up thee nominations, including for best picture, best actress for Saoirse Ronan and for Nick Hornby’s screenplay (adapted from the novel by Colm Toibin).
The 88th Academy Awards will take place in Hollywood on 28 February.
Comedian Chris Rock, who is black, is hosting the star-studded ceremony and many are predicting that he will have a “field day” poking fun at the all-white lineup of actors nominated.
