Quarterman, Lead LSU Over No. 9 Kentucky, 85-67
Tim Quarterman and Craig Victor II were the catalysts for the Tigers, scoring 21 and 15 points respectively, while also combining for 22 rebounds.
He has only fouled out of two games this season, and is so far committing roughly three fouls per game, an impressive rate for a player who uses the highest percentage of the Tigers’ minutes (83 percent). Kentucky could never quite close the gap as LSU always had an answer to the runs led by Kentucky guards Jamaal Murray and Tyler Ulis. Below is a breakdown of how the projected lottery pick performed starting with Ulis and ending with Simmons. Ulis was also 7-8 from the FT line, so the rest of the team was absolutely frightful tonight. Watching the game, he really didn’t have a standout moment. The freshmen handles the ball like a point guard and can shoot from anywhere on the floor. It seemed like a CP3 type of game where he picked his spots wisely and next thing you knew he had 20 points. There was just one through the first 36 games from 1933 through January of 1972.
Another game from Skal Labissiere that was unimpressive.
Gonzaga’s Domantas Sabonis is averaging 20.2 points and 11.6 rebounds in the 10 games since Przemek Karnowski has been sidelined with a back injury. All phases of his game were uninspiring.
Coming into this game, LSU wasn’t even on the bubble.
Labissiere is a great kid who needs experience and extended weight room visits.
Ben Simmons didn’t miss a field goal against Kentucky.
But for Kentucky to do what they want to do, they can’t have performances like that. If you put a smaller player on him, he has the ability to play like a big. We can’t afford to have two or three guys not playing well. We’re not that good. They have a great balance. Whether it was in catch and shoot opportunities or off the dribble, he was always in a good position to shoot. “If you can’t come up with a rebound and you played 12 minutes, and you’re next to the basket, think about it. Come on now”. He showed a couple of really nice isolation moves which are indicative of what he can provide at the next level.
Without him in tow, the Hoosiers are going to have to alter their style and be able to grind out wins, just like they did last night against Wisconsin. He is as skilled as anyone in the draft. I told him after the game, has nothing to do with what you could do offensively.
Now onto the prospect everyone tuned into for, Ben Simmons.
The Wildcats struggled with their shooting early and later were hampered by foul trouble.
Kentucky will welcome Alabama to Memorial Coliseum on Thursday at 7 p.m.
“I was happy that a couple of the guards said some stuff after the game”, Calipari said. LSU lost the talented big men they once had and Simmons can only guard one person.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Freshman Henry Ellenson had 13 points, 10 rebounds and four blocked shots, swatting away Kris Dunn’s attempted buzzer-beater to lead Marquette to a 65-64 victory over No. 8 Providence. “Their guys can shoot the ball, score the ball and made good decisions”. Although he doesn’t look to shoot outside of the paint, his 74% from the line does give his jumper some hope. His basketball IQ is off the chart.
“As a team, we gotta all play”, he said. For the Kentucky radio broadcast go here and for the LSU radio broadcast go here.
The Kentucky Wildcats head out on the road on Tuesday night to take on the LSU Tigers in an SEC battle.
On how United Kingdom has progressed since its last road game at UCLA …
This will mark the third straight season the teams have met in Baton Rouge with LSU winning in 2014 in the “Ice Dome” game 87-82 and then a year ago Kentucky rallied late to win 71-69. Simmons figures to be the number one pick in the 2016 NBA Draft and despite the team underperforming Simmons has done everything he can. “(Simmons’) supporting cast is good.
