Serena Williams withdraws from World Team Tennis
Wimbledon champion Serena Williams will take the next week off in an effort to heal the right elbow injury that forced her out of the Swedish Open, she said in a Facebook post Saturday.
Dubbed the “Year of the Fan” by tournament officials, the event will debut free public Wi-Fi across the 20-acre venue, a new tournament app called WSOpen Now, Levy Restaurants as new caterer for hospitality areas and concessions, and the addition of Palomino to the roster of the eateries in the popular food court.
It was a sixth Wimbledon title and a 21st grand slam crown for Williams, and unless she suffers a dip in form, it seems unlikely anyone can stop her march into the history books at Flushing Meadows where she is unbeaten since 2011.
Three-time defending champion Williams, who shares the Open Era record of US Open titles with Chris Evert at six, can become the first woman to win all four Grand Slams in the same year since Steffi Graf in 1988.
Since turning professional, Serena has skipped playing in major only 11 times.
Aged 33, she outclassed Spaniard Garbine Muguruza 6-4 6-4 in the Wimbledon final earlier this month.
After consolidating her position at the zenith of the world rankings released by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Monday, star American tennis player Serena Williams has completed 250 weeks on the core of the chart.
Even more impressive is Williams has now spent more time at No. 1 over the last two and a half years than she had her entire career before that.
Britain’s Andy Murray, the 2012 US Open and 2013 Wimbledon victor, and reigning French Open champion Stanislas Wawrinka as well as defending champion Marin Cilic and fifth-ranked Kei Nishikori, last year’s US Open runner-up from Japan, are in the line-up.
