New Yorkers blast Cruz’s comments on ‘New York values’
A longtime attorney in Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz’s hometown of Houston has filed a federal lawsuit that questions the Canadian-born lawmaker’s eligibility to be president of the United States.
Several GOP presidential candidates have slammed Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton for her role before and after the attack in Benghazi, saying she knew from the start it was an act of terrorism. On the other hand, Cruz is extremely well-funded; Trump doesn’t really need money, given his gift for free publicity and personal wealth; and neither man has displayed any of Gingrich’s glaring political weaknesses.
Cuomo said in an interview with NY1 that Cruz should apologize to New Yorkers.
De Blasio said Cruz “has no trouble taking money from New York City, but he’s quick to insult our people and our values”. Rubio also used the later portion of the debate to lob a series of attacks against Cruz, accusing him of flip-flopping on everything from immigration to crop insurance and ethanol.
Nowhere was that more evident than at Thursday’s Republican debate, at which the top candidates expanded their ire from President Obama towards each other.
But billionaire Donald Trump raised the question during Thursday night’s debate.
Tonight’s Republican presidential debate finally moved the needle on…kidding, I don’t think any voters were swayed to switch candidates, and I’m not sure there were any performances to close the deal with undecided voters.
Trump fired back at Cruz during Thursday’s debate, describing his emotional connection to the people of New York City that came after the 9/11 attacks.
He’s a strict originalist who believes the Constitution should be interpreted exactly as written – which means, according to Cruz’s view, that the 18th century right to bear arms for the purposes of a militia should extend to all 21st-century US citizens and include new forms of high-powered weaponry. Reached by phone, Schwartz said the issues did not relate to Cruz’s citizenship but that he had wanted to include them as examples of “some of the downside consequences of his being elected”.
In response to a question from moderator Neil Cavuto about a 45 percent tariff on Chinese goods entering the U.S., Trump said the quotation was wrong. “The people of NY fought and fought and fought”.
And, Cruz would suggest, Trump himself should be prepared to make his case in court.
“Now, I hope that was the apology they were looking for”, Cruz said to laughter and applause.
Hannity said “I see no issue here for Ted Cruz”, with Ingraham agreed, saying: “There’s no issue whatsoever”.
He then scolded Cuomo for his remarks that people who don’t embrace his liberal values are not true New Yorkers. He veered off into a standard Trump digression, but miraculously brought it back, continuing, “And we rebuilt downtown Manhattan, and everybody in the world watched and everybody in the world loved NY and loved New Yorkers”.
“Well, look, he may shift in his new rallies to play “New York, New York” because Donald comes from New York and he embodies New York values'”.
And listen, there are many, many wonderful, wonderful working men and women in the state of NY.
But Cruz has been a national player for only about three years, since he came to the U.S. Senate. That’s 14 percentage points higher than the candidate in second place on the PredictIt market, Sen.
“But I would note that the birther theories, that Donald has been relying on, some of the more extreme ones insist that you must not only be born on US soil, but have two parents born on USA soil”, he said.
