Oscars slammed for all-white actor nominees
Last year, Isaac’s made a similar statement when #OscarsSoWhite started to trend on Twitter, but this year she sounds a bit more defeated. He then showed a clip of what snubbed movies like Creed and Straight Outta Compton would have looked like with some slavery “sprinkled in”.
Like past year, all the acting nominees are white and Alejandro Inarritu is the only non-white director nominee.
While NWA biopic Straight Outta Compton was nominated for best original screenplay – after being left out of the Golden Globes nominations – many on social media were quick to point out that the nominated screenwriters were actually white.
Ramon said the film industry is making efforts to diversify, but said the pace is “glacial”. Yep, this means not a single black actor or actress was good enough for an Oscar nomination this year.
Creed earned Sylvester Stallone a nomination for best supporting actor, but what about Michael B. Jordan, who carried the film, or Ryan Coogler, who directed it?
Just 24% of Academy nominations were women, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has faced criticism for years that its members, who vote on the Oscars, lack diversity and are out of touch.
“It nearly seems like a sequel to a year ago”, said Gil Robertson, president of the African American Film Critics Association.
Homeland actor David Harewood also tweeted the hashtag and said actors should turn up in blackface as a “sign of solidarity”. “And don’t forget that ‘Avatar, ‘ the previous all-time box-office champ, got the coveted Best Picture nomination back in 2010”.
Another journalist, Charles M. Blow, wrote, “And Oscars wonder why their viewership was down 18% a year ago!”
The exclusions will likely give comedian Chris Rock, for his pointed remarks on politics and race, some powerful material for his turn as Oscar host on February 28 when the winners are announced.
“I think it’s a shame there’s not more diversity on the screen because films are a mirror of humanity, we should be seeing ourselves there, all of us”.
