Sweat used that as his opportunity to ditch his partner, Guess said, taking off running in an easterly and northerly direction.
Back on June 12, Mitchell was charged with providing tools and information to help Richard Matt and David Sweat escape.

Traveling mostly at night, they bushwhacked through the heavily wooded area, knowing that it would be more hard for searchers.
Matt was shot dead on June 26 in woods near Malone, about 30 miles from the prison. Mitchell changed her mind, but Matt and Sweat managed to elude law enforcement for three weeks as they broke into seasonal cabins.
State police said Guess was not able to speak to The Associated Press on Wednesday.
The escapees eventually split up after Sweat complained Matt was slowing him down.
Attorney Stephen Johnston says he hopes there will be a plea agreement presented in Joyce Mitchell’s case on Tuesday morning during a scheduled appearance in a Clinton County court.
