Rams face huge tasks before reaping big rewards from LA move
Some NFL officials said that while Kroenke would like to be the sole occupant at Hollywood Park, he has some motivation to reach an agreement with Spanos because of the Raiders’ option to move to Inglewood, a less-attractive scenario to the Rams as well as several league officials and owners. Chargers owner Dean Spanos said he would be taking the next few weeks to make his decision as to whether to take the year and continue his pursuit of a new stadium in San Diego or to cut his losses and join Kroenke now.
Both the Chargers and the Raiders made a different proposal wherein they would be sharing a new stadium that’s planned to be built in Carson, but it didn’t get the 24-vote requirement to be approved.
CNN was unable to get immediate answers on ticket costs for when the Rams move to Los Angeles. The Inglewood site is where Kroenke plans a $1.86 billion stadium expected to open in 2019. For one, he has to notify the city of San Diego between February 1 and May 1 whether he will renew the team’s year-to-year lease.
However, Goldsmith said Wednesday he could work with Fabiani.
Spanos has wanted a replacement for San Diego’s aging Qualcomm Stadium for around 15 years. The Chargers moved to San Diego in 1961 and the Raiders moved to Oakland in 1994.
► They could pursue an uncertain path to a new stadium in San Diego, where they’d face a ballot measure at risk of failing. “Downtown is a little bit more challenging and we can’t put our city in that position if we don’t know if the Chargers are staying”, Goldsmith said.
NFL.com reported that the Chargers were “examining the framework of a stadium deal”.
San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer, center, speaks during a news conference about the city’s NFL football team alongside Ron Roberts, chairman of the San Diego County Board of Supervisors, and City Attorney Jan Goldsmith, left, Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2016, in San Diego. “There were bigger problems going on in L.A. when I was young”, said Sherman. The team has to decide by then if they want to move to L.A. for the 2016 season.
Maybe the better play is for Spanos to turn the page on San Diego, trust the process, his colleagues and new partner, and close the deal. In 1948, the Rams became the first NFL team to place an insignia on their helmets and employed Pete Rozelle, a savvy team executive who later presided over the NFL as its longest serving commissioner during the period when the league surpassed baseball in popularity.
It’s unknown if the Rams will be selling personal seat licenses in Los Angeles. “The roof over the stadium would allow the NFL to move events such as the Pro Bowl, NFL Combine and other annual events to the NFL campus as well”. The Chargers also would be able to play at the Coliseum if they opt for Inglewood before the 2016 National Football League season begins this September.
