Van Gaal set challenge by journalist dismissed as ‘fat man’
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has said he needs football to be “entertaining” but refused to criticise the approach of Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal.
“If you look at the football they have played until now, then they don’t warrant their position as they have been pretty dire”.
Liverpool host Manchester United on Sunday as one of the Barclays Premier League’s fiercest rivalries is renewed.
As United are nine points behind the joint leaders, Arsenal and Leicester City, they may end up waiting at least four years between titles, their most recent having come in May 2013.
Meanwhile, Van Gaal has confirmed that his midfield duo of Bastian Schweinsteiger and Michael Carrick will miss Sunday’s game at Liverpool due to injury. “I’m anxious about him because one thing United don’t want is Liverpool to be above us”.
“It would not be the same game if people went into the stadium and thought only about tactics and thought “This player has to move three yards left or four yards right”.
If Christian Benteke is on Liverpool’s team sheet, United must ready themselves for a press-fest.
However, they are now sixth in the league table on 34 points, just two points off fourth placed Tottenham and are three points ahead of ninth placed Liverpool.
And that has kicked the 20 year-old on and he is now the most important players in Van Gaal’s side.
Many are judging Van Gaal’s boring sidewards play, which is world’s away from the dominant attacking play of United’s past.
And Van Gaal lit the blue touch paper ahead of Sunday’s Merseyside meeting by insisting his club would never go so long without being crowned champions.
“You have this player and this player and this player coming because you are there, but then you are not there anymore”.
When the 48-year-old was told of Ferguson’s worry of him doing well at Liverpool, Klopp said: “That’s good, but now I have to prove it!”
Before this game, United had back to back victories which gave hope despite the side not managing a single win during the month of December.
“If he scores it makes it easier for me because I have put all my money on Wayne as a striker”, he said.
In this fixture last season Reds legend Steven Gerrard was sent-off within 48 seconds of going on as a second half substitute.
