Cerezo Slams Atletico Transfer Ban
The ban will prevent them from registering any player at national and worldwide level for the next two complete and consecutive registration periods.
FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee ruled that the capital clubs were in breach of regulations “relating to the worldwide transfer and registration of players under the age of 18”. It said the punishments – which included fines of 900,000 Swiss francs ($900,000) for Atletico and 360,000 Swiss francs for Real Madrid – highlight the success of efforts to protect the rights of underage players. The Barcelona ban finished with the start of the current window, which runs until the end of January.
The transfer ban imposed on the Spanish club forces them to anticipate their summer moves, and there is a possibility they may sign Morata.
The Catalan club was also able to buy players during its ban but not register them to play – most notably Aleix Vidal and Arda Turan who made their debuts for the club this month once the suspension had ended. Real director general Jose Angel Sanchez called the ban “absolutely unjustified” and “totally unexpected”, saying he had “high hopes” of overturning the ban on appeal.
The two clubs can sell players, but there would seem no point because they would not be able to sign any replacements.
Atletico released a statement in response to the ban, in which they promised to fight the penalty.
“They have been given 90 days to regularize the situation of all minor players connected”, according to a Federation Internationale de Football Association statement.
These rules involve the global transfers of players under the age of 18.
Madrid admitted in January that they had supplied Federation Internationale de Football Association with the details of 51 players as part of their investigation, which they claimed were exempt from the regulations for various reasons.
De Gea penned a new contract late past year after his Real move collapsed, but the terms of this agreement included a get out clause, leaving the door ajar for interested sides.
Atletico have already snapped up Augusto Fernandez from Celta Vigo in this window while Matias Kranevitter is now available to coach Diego Simeone after a loan spell at River Plate expired.
