Donald Trump Continues To Fan Ted Cruz Birther Flames
“You’re not”, the billionaire said, addressing the issue of whether Cruz was a natural-born citizen at a rally in Iowa on Saturday night. The real estate mogul has been at or near the top of the GOP polls essentially since he launched his campaign.
During an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday, Trump referenced Harvard law professor Laurence Tribe, who recently said that the law surrounding Cruz’s eligibility is “murky and unsettled”. She is a citizen by birth, so I became an American citizen by virtue of being born to her. I have never breathed a breath of air on this planet when I was not a US citizen.
Trump continued to stress his uncertainty about his chief rival’s legal status on the campaign trail in Iowa and on the Sunday talk shows.
Cruz has been swatting away an increasing number of questions about his eligibility to run for president as a natural born citizen, calling the matter settled law. John McCain (R-Ariz.), have called into question the birthplace of Cruz and whether or not that makes him eligible for the presidency, a question that CNN host Jake Tapper put to the Texas senator on Sunday.
“‘Oh shut up, silly woman, ‘ said the reptile with a grin”.
“There is an Iowa way of campaigning and deciding caucuses”, Cruz told supporters packed into a basement of a pizza restaurant in Decorah.
Cruz told reporters he expects his support in New Hampshire to keep growing. Trump is relying heavily on the support of voters who have not participated in the political process in the past, leading many analysts to predict that he’ll underperform on voting day.
“Next couple of weeks, I’m going to be seeing you so much that you’re going to be so sick of me”, Trump said in Clear Lake.
“I like Rubio. My only concern is he doesn’t have years and years of experience”, one participant said. And I can answer the hard questions.
Trump, though, said he doesn’t like the direction the league is going in.
In Ottumwa, Trump himself vowed to return.
“Republicans are going to have to ask themselves the question: Do we want a candidate who could be tied up in court for two years?”
Yet the usually confident Trump also acknowledged he might not ultimately win the state’s leadoff caucuses next month. “Otherwise, we’re wasting our time, folks”.
“I mean, you’ve got to get a declaratory judgement, you have to have the courts come up with a ruling or you have a candidate who just can not run because the other side will immediately bring suit and you’ve got that cloud on your head”.
“Iowa voters have been mixed on Trump’s approach. That’s not how we enforce the law for any crime”.
But Lars Johnson, a retired chiropractor who lives near Decorah, Iowa, said he wasn’t concerned that Trump was sticking to massive rallies. If these people can get themselves worked up over a president being born in the suspicious-sounding foreign locale of Hawaii, you can rest assured they won’t take Calgary lying down. “I don’t think Trump would be satisfied with a couple hundred people”.
Ziller, who is undecided and leaning toward Trump but likes Cruz, also said he was aware of Trump’s recent attacks on Cruz’s stance on ethanol subsidies.
“No, I don’t intend to send jack boots to knock on your door and every door in America”, the GOP presidential hopeful said.
