American tourist drowns after being chased by villagers in Goa
“There is huge socio-economic impact on co-related activities including truck owners, barge machinery owners, employees, truck drivers, small business owners and workers”, he said, replying to a question by Congress legislator Chandrakant Kavlekar.
The Goa villagers reportedly beat the American tourist and likely caused significant head wounds before the man ran into the rice paddy.
Police officer Umesh Gaonkar told local media outlets that villagers grew suspicious of Holt when they saw him stopping strangers and going into homes in a village outside Panaji.
A laptop was recovered along with Holt’s body, according to local police. “He later ran into a soggy paddy field when he fell and died after being choked, before the police reached the scene”, an eyewitness said on condition of anonymity. “He fell in a paddy field and died after inhaling sludge”, said Parsekar, according to PTI.
A Mob of villagers mistook him to be a thief.
One eyewitness told the newspaper: ‘He was totally out of control and was running helter-skelter, he went to one house asking for tea, he also stopped the two wheelers and tried to grab the key’.
The chief minister did not say when the tourist died or give any details about why villagers may have been chasing him.
The victim appeared mentally disturbed as per the statements of witnesses, a police officer told IANS.
Little information has been shared publicly about Caitanya Holt or why he had traveled to Goa, India.
